Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel seeks the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it constructively. Individual quality matters but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach mention valuing the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club against their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards intimidating opponents rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support for the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists with him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he has. We all must support him and build a atmosphere which he can use that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 who needs support and direction. He has not played for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match versus the German side this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Would taking multiple creators to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's influence as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it harms the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, to have a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
Tuchel talked about Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in a friendly win versus the Scots in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it becomes the responsibility of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Leave the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
