Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
