American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays caused by climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.
