Bluefin Tuna Commands Record Price of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the year.
The winning offer for the 243kg fish came from the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which runs outlets domestically and internationally.
"The year's tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a familiar bidder at the yearly new year's auction.
Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the winning bid," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed before you knew it."
This new purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to shatter his own record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a popular tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year gets underway," said one elated diner.
