Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a rollercoaster last day of play.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.
Playoff Decider
That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Other Performances
Rory McIlroy found himself just too much to do, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
