A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
